DJ Mark Colwill

DJ Mark

DJ Mark found his passion and began his career as far back as 1983 when the music industry was introduced to the ground breaking sound of ELECTRO FUNK. Born from the roots of urban funk, disco and what is now known as Rare Groove, ELECTRO FUNK raised itself from the streets of New York and emerged as the underground sound for the new generation.

In the suburbs of areas such as the notorious Bronx, DJ’s began to surface along with MCs and break dance crews. Legends such as Kool DJ Herc, Afrika Bambatta, Grand Wizard Theodore and Grandmaster Flash created the first generation of the Hip Hop DJ.

DJ Mark spent many a night practicing this new art form, using two second hand Garrad turntables, wired into an amplifier.

His early parties held in the legendary “garage” in Beckenham brought together friends and young DJs, and Mark progressed to staging live Mixes on the infamous LWR radio hosted by a very young Mr Tim Westwood! Mark was now known as DJ Cut Loose.

In 1987 Cut Loose won a DJ mix competition along with a new kid on the block – DJ SY (One of today’s leading hardcore house DJs). The mix was featured on Radio London hosted by a new DJ called Dave Pierce!
DJ Cut Loose was seen as a Scratch DJ and won numerous competitions in Pubs and Clubs that were beginning to stage evenings dedicated to the art of DJing.

At the turn of the decade, the arrival of the sound of House music, Mark veered away from the Hip Hop scene and became involved with DJing at a whole host of “Raves” including legendary M25 “Orbital” parties. Raves became the focus of the media and although they tried in vain to bad press the culture, there was no mistaking that House Music was here and here to stay.

During the 1990s Mark continued to DJ at clubs across London and the South, Cinderella’s (Purley), The Milk Bar (Soho), Hippodrome (London), Barcaves (Blackheath) were just a few of the infamous clubs that Mark worked in.

From 1995 to 2009 Mark was resident DJ at Wimbledon’s Watershed nightclub. Spinning the decks and cutting Hip Hop, House and Dance. Serving one of the longest residences, thousands of people have enjoyed the passion of music shared by DJ Mark Colwill

Mark still continues to work as a full time DJ and has recently launched his Learn to DJ workshop, passing on his skills, experience and passion to a new generation of people who wish to become a DJ.
